Sonic the Hedgehog

It’s remarkable what low expectations can yield.

I put this film on because:

  1. We had nothing else to do or watch.
  2. I remembered the brouhaha that kicked up when the first “Sonic” trailer premiered and the Internet collectively gagged.

I did not put this film on with any expectation that it might be entertaining. Or funny. Or kind of okay.

Yet, it was all three of these things. And it’s the best Jim Carrey performance I’ve seen in years.

To be clear, “Sonic” isn’t a great film. It won’t sit with you for days, haunting your thoughts and making you question your place in the cosmos. But it’s a perfectly fine and frivolous diversion based on a video game about a speedy blue hedgehog–and sometimes that’s all you need.
