In Bruges

This movie is a mish-mash of tones.

(Also, the title is pronounced “In Brooge.” And Bruges is a city in Belgium. I mention this because I did not know either of these things.)

At points “In Bruges” has the sensibility of a Guy Richie movie: criminals who talk a lot being clever while engaging in mundane discussions. Then, it’s a crime film, with the same criminals engaged in violence and gunplay. Then, it’s a romance, then it’s a friends-on-vacation story, then it’s about guilt and the hope for redemption.

You’d think it would be a mess. It isn’t. It’s just sort of unique. Funny. Sad. Violent–but the violence begets real repercussions.
