I care about what this movie represents.

I embrace the idea that there have to be other civilizations in the universe because if it’s only us, it’s a tremendous waste of space. The film’s themes resonate in ways that are quite profound for me. And there are moments I find inspiring–most notably, Ellie’s (Jodie Foster) speech in the finale.

Yet, when I look at this film as a film–when I consider the acting and the execution and all the pieces–I have a hard time connecting to it. There are lots of eye-roll moments. Some of the dialogue and acting are over the top. The science vs. faith debate isn’t handled with any nuance. And the relationship between Foster and Matthew McConaughey doesn’t click.

So, how is it that the same film can be both important to me, yet not particularly good? I’ve never experienced this sort of disconnect before.

A moment I love: After the machine is destroyed, S.R. Hadden (John Hurt) surprises Ellie with news that a second machine has been constructed in secret. Hadden says: “First rule in government spending: why build one when you can have two at twice the price?”
