Bridesmaids

There are parts of “Bridesmaids” that are really funny, but the film is a series of set pieces rather than an actual story.

I held this film in high regard for the roughly 10 years between viewings. But what I discovered upon rewatching it is that I only liked certain performances and moments (Melissa McCarthy being both the star and catalyst of many of those moments). The film’s narrative is largely irrelevant, and if you think about it too much it dims the shine.

Let’s give Ellie Kemper her due: Kemper is a low-key comedy star who deserves a lot more praise. Take a look at her IMDb listing—that is an impressive resume.
