Birds of Prey

I had no reason to think “Birds of Prey” would work.

An entire film revolving around Harley Quinn? And with an R rating? Sure, Margot Robbie as Harley was the sole high point of “Suicide Squad.” But that’s not saying much.

I was wrong. “Birds of Prey” is a fun and inventive story, and everyone involved appears to be having a ball.

What impressed me most was the restraint with the R rating. The violence is cartoonish and creative, not bloody. That was a smart decision because the winking nature of the film–one of its best qualities–would have been crushed by rivers of unnecessary blood and gore.

Finally, a cinematic appreciation for the egg sandwich: I feel seen. Like Harley, I too, take delight in the perfect egg sandwich.
